Telephone
Whisper a message down the line and watch it mutate into glorious nonsense.
Category: party · Players: 6-30 · Duration: 10-20 min · Difficulty: easy
Rules
- Sit in a line or circle. The first player whispers a phrase to their neighbor.
- Each player whispers what they heard to the next — no repeats allowed.
- The last player says the phrase aloud.
- Compare with the original and appreciate the chaos.
Set up before the first turn
Gather 6-30 in a space where everyone can see and hear the current player. No special equipment is required.
Example first round
For a sample opening, the host reads the first instruction: “Sit in a line or circle. The first player whispers a phrase to their neighbor.” Once that is complete, continue with: “Each player whispers what they heard to the next — no repeats allowed.” Treat this first pass as practice if anyone is unsure.
Host it well
- Use a practice turn for new players and rotate the starting player so the same person does not lead every round.
- Keep the explanation brief and start with a demonstration rather than repeating the written rules.
- Plan for about 10-20 min, but finish at the end of a good round if the group's attention starts to drop.
Inclusive play
Let any player pass without explaining why. Adjust time limits, reading, movement, or team roles so people can contribute without disclosing an accessibility need.
